Edge which is short for Enhanced Data rates for GSM Evolution. It is a data transmission system used in mobile phones. EDGE is also referred to as enhance GPRS. This is due to the fact that it’s three times faster than GPRS. GPRS, on the other hand, stands for General Packet Radio Service.
For it to work, the phone and the network in use must both support EDGE. This will allow high data transfer rates between the phone and the network.
This technology was designed to enable mobile phones users to access multimedia applications.
These include streaming videos, audios and even television at high speeds. This makes it meet the minimum requirements to be classified as a 3G network. EDGE is however classified as 2.75G. This technology is still in use today and has undergone enormous improvements.
